What Is Causing My Shoulder Pain?

Are you experiencing shoulder pain? If so, you’re not alone. Shoulder pain is one of the most common medical issues, and various factors can cause it.

Impingement

Impingement is often caused by aberrant movement and tracking of the humeral head during overhead arm elevation. Typically, pain occurs when the arm is raised above 90 degrees.

Arthritis

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common forms of arthritis affecting the shoulder. Both conditions result in decreased range of motion, shoulder muscle weakness, and trouble completing daily activities. When the immune system attacks the membranes around the shoulder joint, resulting in discomfort and inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis develops. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage in the shoulder joint endures severe “wear and tear,” generally due to advancing age or excessive misuse.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis occurs when the shoulder joint is overused, typically due to the physical demands of a person’s occupation, overhead activity, or sport. Because it affects the balance of your shoulders and can create tension and weakness, poor posture might put you at risk for tendonitis. This results in chronic inflammation of the tendons, which leads to swelling and pain when elevating the arm.

Frozen shoulder

The symptoms of a frozen shoulder are a painful loss of shoulder motion and a stiffening of the shoulder joint that severely restricts motion. Adhesive capsulitis is an alternative term for it. This syndrome can arise if your arm has been in a cast or sling for a lengthy period or if you have been bedridden for an extended time. Some races are more sensitive, and women between the ages of 40 and 60 are more susceptible than men.

Rotator cuff injuries

Injuries to the rotator cuff, sometimes known as “torn shoulders,” are frequently linked with severe shoulder discomfort, arm weakness, difficulty reaching behind the back, and difficulty sleeping due to pain. Depending on the intensity and situation, surgery may be required; however, physical therapy can frequently relieve pain and restore rotator cuff strength without surgery. Physical therapy will be an integral part of the rehabilitation process if surgery is necessary.

Benefits Of Physical Therapy For Shoulder Pain

Our physical therapists in Bethpage, Long Island, specialize in treating various shoulder pain disorders without using dangerous medicines or intrusive surgery. During your evaluation, we will consider your range of motion, strength, coordination, medical history, joint mobility, and joint motion mechanics to determine the source of your discomfort.

Once the source has been identified, we can develop a personalized plan to manage and reduce your symptoms. Our treatment plan may include gentle manual therapy to restore normal joint movement, alleviate soft tissue limitations and improve circulation. We may also incorporate specific strength-building exercises and muscle activation sequences tailored to your needs.

Physical therapy is a non-invasive and comfortable way to address shoulder pain while equipping you with new ways to move your body that promote long-term strength and prevent future issues. Many patients report considerable relief after just a few sessions!

Why am I experiencing shoulder pain?

Your shoulder has the highest range of motion out of all your joints, allowing it to perform various physical feats. Unfortunately, its complexity also makes it vulnerable to pain and discomfort. The shoulder is made up of a “ball-and-socket” joint, with the head of the upper arm bone (humerus) fitting into the shoulder blade (scapula). Cartilage protects the ends of these bones so they don’t rub together. Bursae act as fluid-filled sacs that prevent tendons from scraping against bones; tendons connect the shoulder bones to the rotator cuff group of bones. When something goes wrong with this intricate system, pain can result.

The type of shoulder pain you experience may depend on what’s causing it. For instance, impingement-related pain usually occurs when an arm is raised at certain angles in its range of motion. Shoulder degeneration can cause chronic discomfort if the arm is moved in specific directions. Acute injuries can cause sudden, intense shoulder aches that restrict any movement in that area.
